︎ARTDIRECTION ︎DESIGN ︎TYPE ︎PRINT
A talented writer and poet commissioned me to art direct and design their Master’s final piece — a profound collection of stories, interviews, and poems exploring the difficulties and intricacies of life. My direction embraced a minimalist aesthetic, with carefully considered typography and layouts that reflected the emotional and thematic content of the work. The goal was to create a visual language that honored the seriousness of the subject matter while inviting the reader into a thoughtful, immersive experience.
One particularly poignant narrative recounts the physical and emotional journey of weight loss and heartbreak. The typographic design mirrors this transformation: paragraphs begin short and sparse at the start of the story, grow dense and heavy midway, and then taper off towards the end. This shifting rhythm visually echoes the changing physical size of the writer, as conveyed in the text, creating a subtle but powerful connection between form and content.
In another piece, a poem exploring narcissism and the self-obsession inherent in art, the layout itself becomes part of the message. Paragraph breaks are intentionally arranged to spell out the letters “ME” across a double-page spread, turning the act of reading into a visual revelation. This integration of text and design offered a unique opportunity to deepen the work’s meaning through the spatial arrangement of words, encouraging the reader to engage on multiple sensory levels.
Overall, this project presented a fascinating challenge: how to approach deeply personal and difficult themes with the seriousness they demand, while also crafting a visually compelling and surprising experience. The design aimed to extend the power of the written word into the visual realm — creating a space where content and form resonate together, amplifying the emotional impact of the stories and poems.
