A talented writer and poet commissioned me to art direct and artwork their masters final art piece, a collection of stories, interviews, poems about the difficulties and intricacies of life. The direction I took was a minimalist style, with careful typography and layouts that reflected the content. A difficult account of weight loss and heartbreak the paragraphs themselves start short at the beginning of the story to thick and long half way through to again thin to the end mirroring the physical size of the writer told within the text itself. A poem about narcissism and the self obsession of art using the layout of paragraphs carefully spell out the letter's 'ME' across the double page spread. It was an interesting and exciting challenge on how to approach serious subjects with the serious nature, while also making them exciting to read and a visual surprise to flip though.
